Chicago - O'Hare

27.7 Miles

Driving Directions

Transit to downtown Chicago - Blue Line ($5.00 fare)

Follow signs from the baggage claim of Terminal 1, 2 or 3 to the Bus / Shuttle Center.  Find the CTA train station and purchase a Ventra card from vending machines. (more details in local bus section).  Downtown covers many stations but getting off at Clark and Lake will pretty much put you in the center.   You can go up to the elevated platforms and transfer to the Green Line towards Harlem and get off 1 stop away at Clinton.  This will put you on the north end of the Ogilvie station.  Walk south on Clinton and enter station.

Chicago - Midway

41.1 Miles

Driving Directions

Transit to downtown Chicago - Orange Line ($2.25 fare)

Follow signs to CTA bus and train.  Find the CTA train station and purchase a stored value card or multi-day visitor pass from vending machines.  Get off at State and Lake and you can transfer to the Green Line towards Harlem and get off 1 stop away at Clinton.  This will put you on the north end of the Ogilvie station.  Walk south on Clinton and enter station.

Milwaukee - General Mitchell

46.6 Miles

Occasionally it is significantly cheaper to fly into Milwaukee.  Getting to Chicago is easy.

Transit to downtown Chicago and MKE - Amtrak (MKA) Hiawatha 7 daily round trips

There is a free shuttle that runs between the airport terminal and the Amtrak Airport station.

There is also Megabus from downtown Milwaukee to Chicago Union Station

Majority of Routes

Amtrak provides service to Downtown Chicago and most points across the US.  All trains arrive and depart from Union station at 444 W Jackson or W Jackson at N Canal.  It's pretty damn big so you can't miss it.

It is best to call the day before and arrange a pickup time.  Calling for a cab during rush hour or during bad weather or even on weekends can be a mess.

Ventra Fare Card (NEW!) Replaces all old fare passes and cards

Works on CTA, Pace and Metra. Cards have a wireless contact so just tap it on any farecard reader. For Metra, download the Ventra app to buy and display tickets.

Load cash or debit and use per ride or purchase a multi day pass.  If you have other debit cards that use wireless transactions, take Ventra card out and tap only or you may get double charged.  When you buy a new card, it costs $5 but when you register it online, you'll get the $5 back as credit.

The Pace bus that stops near the clinic is Route 574.  Coming from the south, it stops at the northern corner in front of the Mc Donald's.  Coming from the north, it stops near the AM/PM gas station.  There are no sidewalks or crosswalks at the Belvidere/Hwy 45 intersection.  The clinic is located behind the Comfort Suites hotel.   Pace customer service gives out different directions or claim there is no bus.  I have personally confirmed the existence of the bus stops.

There is no bus service on Sundays or holidays.  The 574 runs once per hour at most times.

Bus route has changed from 572 to 574.  You can still take the 572 from the Waukegan Metra station but you have to transfer to the 574 at College of Lake County.  However, there is ONE 572, the 6:55 am (to Carmel High School) from Waukegan Metra that still serves the clinic but only on school days.

There are 2 ways to take the Metra Train.  Actually 3 but these two run daily.

Milwaukee District North is probably the best option.  It runs 7 days a week and frequently during rush hours.  This train departs from Union Station.  From downtown, this would be an 'H' fare ($7.75)

- Get off at the Libertyville Station.  Walk across road (Highway 21/Milwaukee) to the bus shelter and catch Pace Route 574 going north (to Hwy 45) and get off at Belvidere and Highway 45.  Note that the bus runs once and hour and at most time of the day, there is a 40 to 45 minute wait.

- If you want to catch a cab, you can get off at the Prairie Crossing station which is closer in distance to the clinic than the Libertyville station.  But you might have a lesser wait from the Libertyville Station.  You could also walk from Prairie Crossing.  It's about 2 miles and once you cross the street, there is a trail that goes to the hospital behind the clinic.  Note that there is NOTHING around the Prairie Crossing station so I like the Libertyville because there are plenty of services including a Chase Bank.

Metra Union Pacific /  North Line (UP-N) is a good option if you happen to live on that line but coming from downtown Chicago, I'd say the Milwaukee District North is better.  This train departs from the Ogilvie Transportation Center about 3 blocks north of Union Station.  This is an 'H' fare. ($7.75)

- Get off at Waukegan station.  There is a bus stop on the north side of the station.

Pace bus Route 572. Transfer to the 574 at College of Lake County. The 6:55 am 572 is the only 572 that still serves the clinic but on weekdays only.

This is also a good option if you need to be at the clinic before 8 am on a school day.

SUNDAY travel.  There is no bus service that serves the clinic on Sundays.  If you have an early check in on Sunday, you are pretty much out of luck.  Neither Metra train gets there before 10 am.  You can spend the night at the Comfort Suites (info below) which offers an Abbvie rate or some other hotels in Gurnee area (if you want to go shopping at Gurnee Mills!) and take a cab.

If you are checking out, you can walk about 2 miles to the Prairie Crossing station and catch the Milwaukee District North.  Going towards Chicago, there is one at 9:04 am, 11:04 am and 1:04 pm. There is a 10 am train, HOWEVER, it does not stop at Prairie Crossing!  If you can get a ride or take a cab to Grays Lake (I Fare) station, there is a 10:07 am train.

Comfort Suites right next door does offer an AbbVie rate!

There are a few hostels in downtown Chicago.  Though this one is the most expensive, it is by far the nicest, largest and the staff are friendly.  I've stayed here a few times.  They have 10 people dorms and 6 people dorms.  The 6 people dorms are nice but $4 or so more per night.  Definitely worth the money if they are available.  Prices are slightly higher on weekends.  Parking is limited and expensive.
